Important Guggenheim Life and Annuity Rating Update:  8/26/2021

OLDWICK, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–AM Best has been placed under review with developing implications the Financial Strength Rating of B++ (Good) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating of “bbb+” (Good) of Guggenheim Life and Annuity Company (GLAC) (Wilmington, DE).

The Credit Rating (rating) actions reflect GLAC’s decline in surplus and weakening in its risk-adjusted capital position during the first half of 2021, driven in large part by the payment of stockholder dividends to its ultimate parent, Sammons Enterprises, Inc. GLAC’s management is working on a capital plan to increase its capital and surplus and strengthen its risk-adjusted capital position.

The ratings are expected to remain under review while GLAC management finalizes its capital plans and AM Best can fully assess the impact this has on the company’s capital and surplus position and risk-adjusted capitalization.

Guggenheim Life and Annuity is rated B++ by AM Best. As you may notice in the table below Guggenheim has only been assigned a financial strength rating from AM Best and none of the other rating agencies. This is not uncommon for small to mid-size insurance companies and I would not consider it to be the reason for alarm.

There is a cost associated with obtaining a rating from each third-party rating agency and A.M. Best is the Gold Standard for Insurance rating agencies.

Available Indexes

Morgan Stanley Diversified Select Index

The Morgan Stanley Diversified Select Index (the “Index”) offers diversified exposure to a wide range of asset classes, such as US industry sectors, international and emerging market equities, treasuries, bonds, commodities, foreign exchange, real estate, and cash. It achieves this exposure by investing in liquid US-listed ETFs and futures-based indices, using a rules-based methodology designed by Morgan Stanley that seeks to maximize returns for a defined level of risk.

The index provides diversified exposure into up to 23 different liquid assets across asset classes: equities, bonds, commodities, foreign exchange, real estate, and cash, and uses a rules-based strategy, using momentum and diversification techniques to select a multi-asset portfolio (the “Asset Portfolio”) targeting highest historical returns subject to a given level of risk.

The Asset Portfolio is monitored daily and a volatility control mechanism is utilized to attempt to limit volatility and reduce the impact of price fluctuations. The exposure to the Asset Portfolio will be adjusted so that it generally equals the Volatility Target divided by the Realized Volatility of the Asset Portfolio, with the difference going into cash.

The index is calculated on an excess return basis, meaning that the Index level represents the performance of the Asset Portfolio, after application of the volatility control mechanism, over the performance of a cash investment receiving the 3-month LIBOR rate.
