Our Verdict

The way New Yorkers buy Corebridge annuities. The United States Life Insurance Company in the City of New York is the New York-licensed issuer for Corebridge Financial, the former AIG Life & Retirement business. New York’s insurance rules keep many national carriers out of the state, so for New York residents this AM Best A (Excellent) company is a genuinely useful option with real, current rates.

Who Owns U.S. Life of New York and Why It Matters

U.S. Life dates to 1850 and is one of Corebridge Financial’s three issuing companies, alongside American General Life and VALIC. Corebridge was spun out of AIG in 2022. Nippon Life became its largest shareholder in December 2024 after buying a 21.6% stake from AIG, and AIG agreed to keep a 9.9% holding for two years after that sale.

For a New York buyer, the ownership means access to a large, deeply capitalized annuity platform that most out-of-state carriers cannot legally offer in the state. The New York entity holds about $33 billion in admitted assets on its own statutory statement, and every contract is backed by its claims-paying ability, with the New York guaranty association providing a further layer of protection up to state limits.

What U.S. Life of New York Offers

Corebridge Pathway Choice Focus NY MYGA

The Pathway Choice Focus NY series is a multi-year guaranteed annuity available in 3, 4, 5 and 7 year terms with a $25,000 minimum premium. Each term is offered in a base version and a return-of-premium version, which guarantees you can surrender for at least your original premium at any time in exchange for a slightly lower rate.

Assured Edge Income Builder

Assured Edge Income Builder is a fixed annuity built around a guaranteed lifetime income benefit rather than accumulation. It suits a buyer who wants a known future income figure from a New York-licensed carrier and is willing to accept a lower credited rate in exchange for the income guarantee.

Both products are issued only to New York residents. The parent company’s Corebridge Financial review covers the products available in the other 49 states.

Rates come from our live AnnuityRateWatch feed and update daily. You can compare them against every carrier on our current fixed annuity rates page, and the New York annuity rates page shows only the products approved for New York residents.

Is U.S. Life of New York a Good Annuity Company?

Yes, by every public measure of financial strength. AM Best rates it A (Excellent), the third of fifteen levels, and S&P and Fitch both rate it A+. Its Comdex composite score of 81 places it in the top fifth of rated life insurers.

The year-end 2024 statutory statement shows about $33.2 billion in admitted assets, $31.0 billion in liabilities and $2.6 billion in capital and surplus. Our guide to insurance company ratings explains how to read these scales, and annuity safety covers how the guaranty system works.

The practical limitation is not strength but selection. New York rules cap some product features and the state’s approved MYGA rates often trail the best national rates, so a New York buyer should compare this carrier against every other New York-approved option rather than against the national leaderboard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is U.S. Life of New York a safe annuity company?
It holds an A (Excellent) rating from AM Best, A+ ratings from S&P and Fitch, and a Comdex score of 81. Its year-end 2024 statutory statement shows about $33.2 billion in admitted assets against $31.0 billion in liabilities. New York’s guaranty association adds protection up to state-specific limits.
Who owns U.S. Life of New York?
Corebridge Financial, the former AIG Life & Retirement business that was spun out of AIG in 2022. Nippon Life became Corebridge’s largest shareholder in December 2024 when it bought a 21.6% stake from AIG.
Why does U.S. Life of New York only sell in New York?
New York requires carriers that sell in the state to maintain a separate New York-domiciled company under its own insurance rules. U.S. Life is that company for Corebridge, so it serves New York residents while American General Life serves the other states.
What annuity products does U.S. Life of New York offer?
