What Is a Fixed Annuity?
A fixed annuity is a contract with an insurance company that pays a guaranteed interest rate for a set number of years. The most common type is a multi-year guaranteed annuity (MYGA), which locks your rate for the full term, usually 2 to 10 years. When the term ends, you can withdraw the money, roll it into a new annuity, or turn it into income.
How a Fixed Annuity Works
You make a single deposit, and the insurance company credits interest at the guaranteed rate every year of the term. The interest grows tax-deferred, so you pay no income tax on it until you withdraw it. Taking out more than the free withdrawal amount before the term ends can trigger a surrender charge.
Fixed Annuity Features That Matter
- Guaranteed rate: locked for the full term, not a first-year teaser rate.
- Compound vs. simple interest: a simple interest rate earns less over the term than the same compound rate.
- Free withdrawals: many contracts let you take 10% a year, or your interest, with no penalty.
- Surrender charges: a fee for withdrawing more than the free amount before the term ends.
- Insurer rating: the guarantee is backed by the claims-paying ability of the insurance company, so check its AM Best rating.
- Minimum deposit: minimums vary by product, and some pay a higher rate on larger deposits.
How Much Does a $100,000 Annuity Pay?
A $100,000 five-year fixed annuity at 6.55% (simple interest) grows to $132,750 guaranteed, compared to $124,618 in a CD at 4.50%. And because CD interest is taxed every year while annuity interest is tax-deferred, a saver in the 24% bracket keeps only about $118,310 of that CD growth.
Enter your deposit, term, and tax bracket to see what each option keeps after tax, and the CD rate you would need to match the annuity.
Tax deferral means the annuity credits interest on the full balance every year instead of on the balance left after the IRS takes its share. CD interest is reported and taxed each year even if you never touch it, so the amount actually compounding shrinks annually. At a 24% bracket, a CD would need to pay —% to leave you with what a —% annuity does, and you control the timing of the annuity's tax bill by choosing when to withdraw.
Illustration only, not tax advice. Assumes a single federal bracket held flat for the full term, annual compounding, no state income tax, no withdrawals, and tax on annuity interest paid in full at the end of the term. Withdrawals before age 59½ may carry a 10% IRS penalty. Want monthly income instead of growth? See the immediate annuity calculator.

Key Buying Considerations
Carriers file products state by state, so the highest rate in the table may not be offered where you live. Set the state filter to see the contracts you can actually buy.
Check the insurer's A.M. Best rating. Higher-yielding rates often come from smaller or mid-tier companies with lower financial ratings (e.g., B++ or A-) compared to A+ or A++ industry giants.
Withdrawing money past your penalty-free allowance (usually 10% per year) before the term ends triggers heavy surrender fees.
Similar to CDs, longer commitments usually offer higher yields. A 7-year annuity typically pays more than a 3-year annuity because the insurer can lock up your cash in higher-yielding, longer-term bonds.
Many carriers offer tiered interest rates. Deposits over $100,000 or $250,000 frequently receive a premium rate boost of 0.10% to 0.50% compared to lower deposits.
Standard contracts allow you to withdraw 10% of your money annually without penalty. "No-surrender" or highly liquid annuities offer lower rates, while stricter contracts with higher exit penalties generally offer the highest yields.
Understanding Annuity Rates
Fixed vs. Fixed Index Annuities
Not all annuity rates are the same. An indexed annuity rate describes how interest is credited to your annuity based on the performance of a market index, such as the S&P 500. A cap rate is the most you could earn, a participation rate is the percent of the growth you would earn. If you are looking for fixed index annuity rates you can find them here instead.
MYGAs vs. Bonds and CDs
Fixed annuities, CDs and bonds all pay a set interest rate on a lump sum for a set term. CDs are FDIC‑insured, bonds can lose value if you sell before maturity, and fixed annuities are backed by the insurance company and often pay the highest multi‑year guaranteed rate. Annuity interest also grows tax‑deferred, while CD and most bond interest is taxed every year (see our fixed annuity vs. CD comparison).
| Fixed Annuity (MYGA) | Bank CD | U.S. Treasury | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top 5-year rate | 5.83% today, guaranteed all 5 years | About 4.50%* | About 4.05%* |
| Backed by | Insurance company, plus state guaranty association limits | FDIC, up to $250,000 | U.S. government |
| How interest is taxed | Tax-deferred until you withdraw | Taxed every year, even if you leave it in | Taxed federally each year; exempt from state tax |
| Access before maturity | Often 10% free withdrawal per year; surrender charge beyond that | Early withdrawal penalty, often several months of interest | Sell anytime, but the price moves with the market |
| Terms available | 2 to 10 years | 3 months to 5 years | 4 weeks to 30 years |
| Best for | Multi-year guaranteed growth with tax deferral | Short-term savings and emergency funds | Flexibility to sell, and state-tax savings |

What is a good fixed annuity rate right now?+
As of today, the best fixed annuity rate on our platform is 6.95% for 7 years from Knighthead Life (simple interest). The top 5-year rate is 6.55%. Anything within about half a percentage point of the top rate for your term is competitive. Rates change daily, so compare every contract in our Rate Marketplace before you apply.
Are there any 7% fixed annuities?+
Not among today's full-term guaranteed rates. Rates advertised at 7% or higher are usually first-year bonus or teaser rates that drop in later years, or income-rider payout percentages, which are not yields. Every rate on this page is guaranteed for the full term.
Are fixed annuity rates going up or down?+
Fixed annuity rates follow the bond yields insurers earn, which move with Federal Reserve policy and Treasury rates, so no one can predict the next move with certainty. When rates fall, carriers lower the rates on new contracts within weeks. A multi-year guaranteed annuity locks the current rate for the full term, so a later rate cut does not change the rate on a contract you already own.
Is my money safe in a fixed annuity?+
Fixed annuities are not FDIC insured. They are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurer and, within limits, by your state guaranty association. The AM Best column shows each carrier's financial strength rating, and our guide to annuity safety explains how the protections work.
What AM Best rating should I look for? Is B++ good?+
AM Best rates insurers from A++ (Superior) down. A B++ rating falls in the "Good" range and is still considered secure. We list every AM Best-rated carrier we can place and show the grade next to each rate, so you can weigh yield against financial strength yourself. Higher-yielding contracts often come from A- and B++ carriers, while A+ and A++ companies typically pay a little less for their extra financial strength. Our insurance company ratings guide breaks down every rating tier.
Do fixed annuity rates differ by state?+
Yes. Carriers are licensed state by state, so the best rate available to you depends on where you live, and some products credit different rates in certain states. Set the state filter in the table above, use the state links on this page, or browse all annuity rates by product type.
Can I take money out before the term ends?+
Most contracts allow a penalty-free withdrawal each year, often 10% of the account value, and some allow interest-only withdrawals. Anything above that is subject to a surrender charge and, where applicable, a market value adjustment. The free withdrawal column shows what each contract allows.
How long is a quoted rate locked after I apply?+
Rate-lock rules vary by carrier. Most hold the rate in effect on your application date for a set window, commonly 30 to 60 days, as long as your funds arrive inside it; a few credit the rate in effect on the day funds are received. Transfers and 1035 exchanges take the longest, so confirm the carrier's rate-lock policy before you apply.
How is annuity interest taxed?+
Interest grows tax-deferred inside the contract. You owe tax when you withdraw, at ordinary income rates, and withdrawals before age 59 and a half may carry a 10% IRS penalty. Money moved by 1035 exchange or trustee-to-trustee transfer is not a taxable event.
What does it cost to buy through you?+
Nothing. You pay no fees and no commissions, and the rate you see is the rate the carrier credits. We are paid by the insurance company after your contract is issued, and our process explains every step. Your information is never sold.
What happens at the end of the term?+
You choose: withdraw the full value, roll into a new contract at current rates, renew with the same carrier, or convert to lifetime income. We contact you before the window opens so the decision is not made by default. Our annuity guide walks through each option.
What is a MYGA? Is it the same as a fixed annuity?+
A MYGA (multi-year guaranteed annuity) is the type of fixed annuity that locks one guaranteed rate for a set number of years, similar to a CD. It is the product type shown in the table on this page. "Fixed annuity" is the broader category, which also includes traditional fixed annuities whose rate can reset each year. Read our full MYGA guide for details.
